A two-reel journey of aesthetic subterfuge; the landscape of our built environment. Take a tour of fourteen sites from Northern to Southern California in latitude order.
Once I began noticing the manufactured trees, I became curious about the need for camouflage; the demand for digital connection, and desire for the infrastructure to be invisible. On photo excursions to photograph sites of industrial extraction in the landscape, my husband, Tony Bellaver and I search for and log locations of the accessorised monopoles. Trying to understand how it works, I imagine our digital messages moving through the landscape by wire and electromagnetic waves. The faux trees become silent witnesses to our movements and relationships as our geolocation data is collected and monetized.
