Mary V. Marsh: Reading the Landscape
My cautionary response to a reading of the current landscape of news and media systems through prints and artist’s books. Newspaper-like artist's books letterpress printed with linoleum and handset type are a critical contrast to continually updated screens. Photopolymer intaglio prints and books of cell towers disguised as trees show a view of our environment with a future nostalgia.Feb 1 - March 14, 2025

Artists in Conversation
Tony Bellaver & Mary V. MarshTony and I gave a presentation on our artist's books at Chung 24 Gallery in Noe Valley. Tony's book "In the Absence" is included in the current show, Touchstone, curated by Irene Imfeld, featuring landscape photography, and gallery director Diane Chung invited us to be Artists in Conversation.
We had a great time talking about ways that we collaborate in making our art, and some of the photographic processes that we use.
Big thanks to Jeff Heyman for this great photo!

Work by Zach Clark, Sarah Klein, Mary V. Marsh, Andy Rottner and Lorna Stevens.Five Bay Area artists have translated their book works to mixed media objects and multimedia projects. The results challenge the viewer to consider the book as print, sculpture, animation, or electronic game. Some pieces share the process used in creating it, while others expand a concept by presenting it in a new format, broadening and enhancing our notions of what a book can be and do.

An installation about reading with rubbings from the surrounding streets as evidence of here, and linoleum cuts on book pages and hands holding books to suggest journeys in the mind experienced now. Viewable at any time, it is on Milvia, a Bicycle Boulevard.

Collecting stories about a book that you read, and when you remember it you think about where you were when you read it. Read Here Now
Do you have a memory of reading a book, a story that you always associate with where you were, and what you were doing while reading it? While making my window installation Between Here & Now, I was thinking about this idea of experiencing both my physical location and the world in my mind at the same time.
contribute a memory about reading
Print out and write down a memory you have of reading a book that always reminds you of where you were when you were reading it.
You can also color in the blank book to evoke the story or the place you remember. Please take a photo of each and email it to mary@mvmarsh.com. I will be sharing the stories on my instagram and compiling them into an artist's book.
