Semaphore
Created from a retired Rainbow Pride flag that had flown above Harvey Milk Plaza, in the Castro, San Francisco, and was donated to the California Society of Printmakers. I used grommets and binding posts to preserve the characteristics of a flag and create pages for the book to be read like a codex. When the binding posts are removed, it can be stretched out, to send its message far and wide. The semaphore is an early wordless communication system, using colors and shapes to be seen from long distances. The linoleum cut hands are holding each section as if holding a book to refer to reading the message, and how everyone will receive it in their own way. The hands become personal portraits. Touch is an important sense we use to gather information, hold knowledge, and pass the message on. Flags are importantly a sign of taking up space, honoring that spot with a message of ownership and safety.
I’m honored to share space with some incredible people who posed for these linoleum cuts; Jim Van Buskirk, Dianne O’Connell, Jessica Sabogal, Nick Shick, and Shanna Strauss. Printed by hand, sewn, and letterpress printed at Kala Art Institute. 2025
